Distillation Plant with glass reactor
A distillation plant with glass reactor made of borosilicate glass is a compact, integrated system for carrying out chemical reactions followed directly by solvent removal, purification, or fractionation in the same line. At its core is a borosilicate 3.3 glass reactor equipped with mechanical agitation, bottom discharge valve, and jacket or heating bath for precise temperature control across a wide operating range.
The reactor vapour outlet leads to a glass distillation column, fitted with packing, reflux divider, condensers, product cooler, and one or more receivers, all assembled from standardized glass components on a common support frame.
This arrangement allows synthesis, stripping of low boiling solvents, fractional separation of components, and solvent recovery to take place without transferring product between different pieces of equipment, reducing hold up and contamination risk.
Borosilicate glass provides full visual access to boiling behaviour, column flooding, and phase separation while offering excellent resistance to most acids, solvents, and thermal shock, making the plant robust and easy to clean between campaigns.
The modular design enables quick reconfiguration by changing column height, packing type, or receiver layout, so the same plant can support simple batch distillation, azeotropic drying, or more complex reaction distillation schemes.
Typical applications include pharmaceutical and fine chemical R&D, kilo lab and pilot plant operations, solvent swap and recovery, essential oil or fragrance purification, and teaching laboratories that require a safe, transparent demonstration of coupled reaction and distillation processes.
Usage:
- The plant allows users to charge reactants into the glass reactor, perform stirred reaction under controlled temperature and pressure, then distil off solvents or light ends through the column without breaking the system.
- Condensed vapours can be returned as reflux or directed to receivers for solvent recovery, product collection, or fraction cut change over, making it ideal for continuous or batch reaction–distillation campaigns.
Technicalities:
- The heart of the plant is a borosilicate 3.3 glass reactor, equipped with mechanical stirrer, bottom drain valve, and heating–cooling arrangement for precise temperature control.
- A side or top vapour outlet connects to a packed distillation column, reflux divider, coil condenser, product cooler, and one or more receivers, all supported on a rigid steel frame.
- Materials of construction typically include borosilicate glass, PTFE fittings, and stainless steel structure, offering full vacuum capability, operation up to around 200 °C, and excellent corrosion resistance.
Applications:
- Widely used in pharmaceutical and fine chemical R&D, kilo labs, and pilot plants for synthesis, solvent swap, concentration, and purification of high value intermediates and APIs.
- Also suitable for specialty chemicals, Flavors and fragrances, and teaching laboratories where corrosion resistance, safety, and clear visibility of every process step are critical.
Salient Features:
- Fully transparent process path for visual monitoring of boiling, foaming, flooding in the column, and phase changes during operation.
- Modular design with interchangeable columns, condensers, and receiver configurations, enabling easy adaptation from simple to fractional distillation or azeotropic drying.
- Capability to run at atmospheric pressure or under deep vacuum, with minimal holdup volume and high chemical cleanliness for sensitive products.
