Liquid-liquid extraction unit
The typical setup includes a borosilicate glass extraction vessel, a separate reboiler for the solvent, an overhead condenser, reflux divider, and interconnecting pipework with precision valves to direct flow paths.
Weak feed solution is charged to the extraction vessel, while the chosen solvent is boiled in the reboiler, condensed, and introduced either at the bottom or top of the extractor depending on phase densities to maximise contact area and mass transfer efficiency.
Because all main components are fabricated from borosilicate glass 3.3, the unit offers outstanding resistance to corrosive chemicals and allows operators to visually observe droplet formation, dispersion, coalescence, and phase disengagement during operation.
Modular DN flanges and standard joints make it easy to adapt the same unit for single stage or multistage extraction, adjust residence time, or integrate additional columns and phase separators as process needs evolve.
After extraction, the enriched solvent and raffinate are drained separately, while the solvent can be regenerated in the reboiler and recycled, significantly reducing solvent consumption and operating costs.
Such units are widely used in pharmaceutical and fine chemical plants for API purification, impurity removal, and solvent swaps, as well as in food, fragrance, and environmental laboratories for recovering valuable organics or removing trace contaminants from aqueous streams.
- In a semi batch configuration, the feed liquid is charged to the extraction vessel while the solvent is boiled in the reboiler, condensed, and introduced either at the top or bottom of the extractor to maximise contact area between the immiscible phases and enhance mass transfer.
- After sufficient mixing and phase disengagement, the raffinate and extract streams are drained separately, while the solvent can be continuously recycled through the reboiler–condenser loop for multiple extraction stages and higher separation efficiency.
- The unit typically combines a borosilicate glass extraction vessel or column, a separate glass reboiler/solvent vessel, overhead condenser, reflux divider, and interconnecting pipework with precision valves to direct the light or heavy phase entry points.
- Borosilicate 3.3 glass provides excellent chemical resistance and thermal shock stability, while modular joints, PTFE valves, and mild steel or stainless steel support structures allow easy scaling from 10 to 200 L and safe operation under vacuum or slight overpressure conditions.
- Borosilicate glass liquid–liquid extraction units are widely used in pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries for API purification, removal of impurities, solvent changeovers, and recovery of high value intermediates where visual monitoring and low contamination are essential.
- They are equally suited to petrochemical, flavour and fragrance, and environmental laboratories for separating aromatics, metal complexes, and trace organics from aqueous or organic matrices, offering a flexible, easy to clean platform for process development and teaching.
