Rotary Evaporators (Lab and Industrial scale)
Rotary evaporators made from borosilicate glass provide reliable, corrosion resistant solvent evaporation from small laboratory batches up to demanding pilot and industrial scale duties.
The transparent glass evaporation flask, vapor duct, and condenser allow complete visual control of boiling behaviour, bumping, and crystallisation while resisting attack from aggressive organic solvents and acids.
In operation, the rotating flask forms a thin film of product over the heated surface, dramatically increasing evaporation area and enabling rapid solvent removal even at reduced bath temperatures.
Integrated vacuum operation lowers the boiling point, protecting heat sensitive ingredients and shortening residence time, which is essential for APIs, natural extracts, and specialty chemicals.
Modern systems combine digital control of rotation speed, bath temperature, and lift position with high efficiency condensers and chemically inert PTFE seals to maintain tight vacuum and safe, leak free performance.
Bench top units typically handle 1–5 L flasks for routine concentration, solvent exchange, and sample drying, while pilot and industrial models with 5–50 L or larger capacities support kilo lab and production campaigns.
Typical applications include concentration of reaction mixtures, recovery and recycling of expensive solvents, preparation of plant and herbal extracts, removal of residual solvents from crystallised solids, and sample clean up for analytical labs.
- In operation, the product is charged to the borosilicate evaporation flask, which is then rotated at controlled speed while the bath gently heats the liquid under vacuum to create a stable thin film. Vapors pass through the glass vapor duct to the condenser and product cooler, where they liquefy and drain into a receiver for clean, segregated solvent recovery, while operators fine tune vacuum level, bath temperature, and feed rate for maximum throughput and minimal thermal stress.
- Borosilicate glass 3.3 wetted parts and PTFE seals offer universal chemical resistance and a smooth, non reactive process path, with clear visibility of boiling, film formation, and condensate flow. A rotating evaporation flask partially immersed in an electrically heated water or oil bath forms a thin liquid film, while a vacuum tight hollow glass shaft carries vapors to a high surface area condenser and receiver assembly, enabling operation under deep vacuum at significantly reduced product temperatures.
- On both lab (1–5 L) and industrial units (20–100+ L), key options include digital control of bath temperature and rotation speed, over temperature cut off, automatic bath lifting, and modular condensers and receivers sized for different loadings. Robust stainless steel support frames with castors, protected heaters, and standardized joints allow safe handling, easy cleaning, and straightforward integration with vacuum pumps and chillers.
- Laboratory scale borosilicate rotary evaporators are used for solvent removal, concentration, and purification of reaction mixtures in R&D chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, flavors, and academic labs. Industrial and pilot scale systems extend these principles to larger volumes for continuous or batch distillation, concentration, solvent recycling, crystallization, and drying of heat sensitive products in pharmaceutical, chemical, herbal extraction, cosmetics, fragrance, and fine chemical plants.
