Solid–liquid extraction unit
A solid–liquid extraction unit constructed from borosilicate glass is a semi-batch system designed to efficiently transfer soluble components from a solid matrix into a liquid solvent. The borosilicate glass offers excellent chemical resistance, ensuring durability even when handling aggressive solvents and harsh substances. Its transparent nature provides exceptional visibility, allowing operators to closely monitor the extraction process at every stage. This clear view improves control over extraction efficiency and helps detect any issues promptly.
The system is designed to optimize solvent use, promoting solvent economy and reducing waste. Its smooth, inert surface simplifies cleaning and maintenance, supporting consistent product purity. The semi-batch design allows flexibility in operation, suitable for both small- and large-scale extractions. This unit is ideal for pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries where careful handling and effective extraction are critical. Overall, it combines safety, efficiency, and visual process control within a reliable and robust setup.
- In operation, the solid material is loaded into the extraction basket or sleeve and positioned in the extractor; solvent in the reboiler is heated, its vapors condensed in the overhead condenser, and the condensate repeatedly percolates through the solids, enriching the extract until the target concentration is reached.
- The loaded extract is then drained from the reboiler or receiver, while the solvent can be regenerated and reused, reducing solvent consumption and supporting greener, more economical processes.
- The unit typically consists of a borosilicate 3.3 glass extraction vessel fitted with an internal basket or glass fiber bag for the solid, coupled to a glass reboiler (boiling flask), vertical extractor body, and condenser that continuously recycles hot solvent through the solid bed.
- Modular DN flanges, standard taper joints, and PTFE valves provide leak tight operation and easy cleaning, while the glass construction tolerates repeated heating–cooling cycles and aggressive solvents without corrosion or product contamination.
- Borosilicate glass solid–liquid extraction units are widely used for botanical and herbal extraction, fat and oil determination, flavors and fragrances, nutraceuticals, and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) isolation, where gentle conditions and visual monitoring are valuable.
- They are equally suited to fine chemicals, food testing, and academic research for recovering bioactive compounds, pigments, alkaloids, and other solubles from seeds, leaves, powders, and polymers, offering a robust, transparent platform for method development and quality control.
